"The purpose of the congress is to support the development of mathematicians in the classroom learning community, rather than fixing mistakes in the children’s work or getting agreement on answers."-Communication in the Mathematics Classroom from Capacity Building Series

Using Math Congress in the P/J Classroom

WHEN
  • After students have worked on an open-ended mathematical problem (in groups, partners or independently)
  • As a reflection piece in the mathematics lesson after students have had ample time to solve the problem.  The entire process may take several days.
  • As students are ready to move forward with a strategy or concept OR
  • When students need an opportunity to discuss a strategy or concept with one another (ask questions, clarify understandings of big ideas)

 HOW
  • Students work on a mathematical problem (often in partners or small groups)
  • Students write their answer on chart paper- their answer should:
    • Be clear and easy to read
    • Identify their mathematical strategy
    • Use pictures and/or words as evidence
  • As work on their solutions, the teacher should decide:
    • Which strategies should be presented
    • How will the discussion be beneficial to students’ mathematical thinking with those strategies
    • What order should the strategies be presented
