Role
of the TEACHER
Teachers support students
to grow as mathematicians when they...· present an open-ended math problem to be solved which has multiple entry points for student learning
· create a
positive, safe, inclusive learning environment for students to share their
thinking
· use prompting
questions during the ‘Working On It’ phase for students to reflect on their thinking (without leading them towards a solution)
· clarify
misunderstandings
· allow students
enough time to solve and communicate their thinking
· decide which
strategies should be presented to the class
· decide which
order strategies should be presented to the class
· assess students’
mathematical reasoning and understanding
· facilitate a
group discussion; the following questions may help:
o
Will this strategy always work? How do you know?
o
When will this strategy not work? How do you know?
o
How is this strategy different from the previous
ones? How is it the same?

Role
of the STUDENT
Students help their classmates and themselves grow as mathematicians when they... · put effort into solving their math problem; try their best and preserve if it becomes difficult
· share their
strategies with the class if they are chosen, discuss with their partner what
they will present
· justify and
defend their thinking
· ask questions if
they do not understand something or disagree with someone using accountable
math talk
· be an active
listener while others are sharing
· metacognitively
compare their own strategies to those presented by their classmates
· connect new
strategies to prior knowledge to help them understand the big ideas
